Winter Survival is a narration - driven survival craft game set in the unforgiving winter wasteland . After a tripper goes ill-timed , the unprepared main character must struggle to survive in one of the harshest wilderness conditions conceivable , with both his physical and genial health at wager . While the game already has some interesting machinist , it has a ways to go from its Early Access state to being the plot it truly has the electric potential to be .
The sanity system is the plot ’s most unique mechanic and , by far , its most interesting .
Each day that pass in the harrowing wilderness takes a cost on the mental health of our protagonists . Starving , desiccation , close meeting with predator , and – of form – freezing can all take an understandable toll on a man ’s psyche . Winter Survival meditate this with its unique saneness system that makes the game more interesting as you turn a loss your mind .
Each night after you stomach a traumatic event , you must add a negative trait to your playthrough that ’s portrayed as a loss of saneness . These mostly come in the form of hallucination , such as rocks in your path or living dead deer , which trigger at random . You start to realize the wallop these insanity trait can have on your period of play when you seek to walk on a log bridge , only to find out it was never there in the first place .
At its core , Winter Survival is a horror game , and it does a really in force job with some of the creepy-crawly face it move for . By far , one of my preferred moments was when I neglected my hydration , and an unfamiliar interpreter popped up over the radio and say , “ Thirsty ? ”
I ’ll admit that I ’m not a big fan of many of the game ’s survival craftiness mechanics , which require craft benches and other basic through the use of the biz ’s UI . Something more like Sons of The Forest ’s incredibly immersive crafting system would be better here , using immersion setting animations and no unneeded “ Crafting bench ” to make you experience like you ’re in the state of nature .
trouble can be a trouble in Winter Survival . It ’s frustratingly easy to accrue into a death loop , even early into the story .
Do n’t get me wrong , a game about selection should be challenging . After all , that ’s kind of the charm , right ? live over the revulsion and struggles of prove to hold up in the uncaring , unforgiving wild , all in the safety of a picture secret plan . It ’s just a piddling too hard in Winter Survival ’s current body politic .
I ’ll give you an example of a particularly thwarting end iteration I caught myself correctly at the start of the secret plan . This was in the prologue , immediately after the game spread out up to me and allowed me to run around on my own . Before this , there were just cutscenes and written encounter , so this was my first chance to play the plot .
The first cockcrow you come alive up and are given real control in Winter Survival , you have no resources , torn and slopped clothing , supremely dehydrated , and part from your backpack . You ’re instantly give three objectives to complete : tailor-make your clothing so you do n’t freeze , dry your clothing so you do n’t freeze , and find your backpack .
Going after any of these object lens at the wrong pace will inevitably do you to immobilize to death or die of desiccation .
On my first few tries , have no readable access code to water , I examine dry my clothes first . There was no fashion I was go to be capable to sew them just yet , as it ask access to a ton of materials I simply did n’t have anywhere nearby . If I did n’t first progress a fire , I would freeze to demise , taking my wearing apparel off to dry . In the time it took for my wearing apparel to dry , I would be too desiccate to uphold and would then die of dehydration .
of course , I assumed I should , therefore , go after my backpack instead , remembering that in the cutscene before this , I fill my weewee bottleful completely and thus would be able to drink from it . After a few attempts at finding the backpack , each resulting in death and redeem load , I eventually got to it without croak and opened it up to find it . The water bottle was nearly empty . So , I then had to find a source of pee , which I did , but it fail to the wolves sitting around it a few time . However , I eventually managed to sneak up to it and get a drink , only to die shortly after . I immobilise to to death because my clothes were still wet and full of kettle of fish .
You ca n’t be so unappeasable with the survival mechanics in a game like Winter Survival , which wants to trade you on a narrative experience through its story and guided objectives . Setting me up so that I need to accomplish several pressing and time - pressing issues as soon as I ’m given control of the plot is setting me up for disaster for sure . A player need prison term to search their surroundings , get an idea of what ’s going on , and figure out just how the game works before these important issues can be solve . determine the instrumentalist up to be stuffy to demise right at the start and then throw charge objectives on top of it is sort of like setting someone ’s firm on fire and then recount them to supervene upon the smoke alarm ’s batteries before they escape .
in conclusion , my biggest issue with Winter Survival is probably its lack of “ show , do n’t order . ” Your lineament invariably speak , points out obvious information , and tells you what your next step should be . nifty minute of tension are ruin by the character talking , often with what he ’s trying to say already being visually displayed to the player . This is at its worst when the character audibly reacts to hallucination that were n’t actually in photographic camera view , which immediately bust my immersion and left me plump , “ huh ? ”
