When I reviewed the Starship Troopers : Extermination other Access ramp up , there was nothing else quite like it on the grocery store : an actual Starship Troopers shooter , set in the universe of the movies and putting you immediately in the skid of the mobile infantry . Die - hard fans of the series ( of which there is still a surprising number , considering the pic came out over twenty years ago ) were pleasantly surprised by the expiration and quickly cluster to what promised a one - of - a - sort experience .
However , since then , we have had the equally surprising breakout success ofHelldivers II , a game that seemed to be the only affair on anyone ’s mind for month and stay on to be improbably popular . While not a plot set straightaway in the Starship Troopers IP , the mise en scene bears enough resemblance that you could outright call it a lampoon , and it has captivate a significant amount of the Starship Troopers fanbase as die - hard instrumentalist .
While the two game have their dispute , they bear enough law of similarity and attract enough of the same people that it has to be asked if they can really coexist ; comparisons between the two are constantly made throughout the game ’s Steam reviews , and frankly , after playing both , I do n’t feel right reviewing Starship Troopers : Extermination without making the comparison myself .
Can the games subsist together without cannibalise the same audience , or do the two lack enough concrete separation that I can say fans of the Starship Troopers enfranchisement should just run one over the other ?
Starship state trooper : liquidation is an extraction - eccentric shooter that stone 16 players of vary class against the franchise ’s infamous bugs . The whole section feels like that scene from the first picture show , and I have no doubt it was specifically designed to appeal to nostalgic fans of that very moment .
Each player takes the character of various storage tank , damage , or backup category to create a cohesive unit of 4 squads . Teamwork is all-important here because each player can very easily be decimate by hemipteran on their own , with minimal opportunity to toss off more than one warrior before being overrun . Like the movies , the game really want you to crouch down and hold up the transmission line with saturated firepower and not pelt along out and try on to get ahead the daylight all on your own .
In theory , these are all really good idea when paired with the Starship Troopers IP . In practice , however , things start to descend aside .
One of the heavy issue with Starship Troopers : extinction is the game ’s execution problems . player should n’t be surprised to encounter build drops or dash when endeavor to play this championship . Alongside these unintentional issue , I ’d say the gunplay felt pretty barebones and uninteresting . kick was often heavy , and there was little fluctuation between the dissimilar guns , at least that I could pick up on . Overall , I did n’t feel a lot of gratification using my armory of weapons . Aiming down quite a little particularly feel dull and awkward ; I never really felt like my hits were registering , and overall , the organisation just felt bare bone .
