Developers Hyperstrange must be after my own heart , as the creators of the wondrous creepyBlood Westhave once again beguile my attention with Hordes of Hunger , a horror - fantasy survivorslike with some fun twists on the genre and a phenomenal aesthetic . Though the plot has some secure bone , this Early Access title certainly has a ways to go before it ’s quick for a full release , and I found after the end of my playthrough that my only real complaint about the game was that I wanted more , more , more .

Hordes of Hunger is a survivorslike lay out in a dingy fantasy humanity of unique design . I ca n’t tell you a whole fortune about the story , as the pre - Early Access release written matter I was given to go over send packing me directly into the world with no cutscenes , introduction , or much storytelling outside of contextless conversation that I engaged with after each mission . Still , what I was capable to meet was that the world has go to hell thanks to an invasion of military personnel - eating dead , something call the Beast moderate them , and we are the last hope for saving everyone , alongside the assist we get from our as if by magic gifted father .

A slew is miss from Hordes of Hunger at the consequence , and that is no surprisal . I require to once again emphasise that this follow-up is written around a variant of the plot that has n’t even entered its public testing phase yet . However , what Hordes of Hunger certainly has put together at this point is its heart and soul gameplay mechanics , and they shake .

Once again , Hordes of Hunger is a survivorslike , meaning that the secret plan has players enter one of several maps ( quite a few available at the start , really , which is quite telling ) and struggle against more and more unmanageable enemies in increasingly larger waves while earning XP for buffs and stat increases to front the horde . After complete a series of every which way choose side quests , Hordes of Hunger has you face a boss , of which I ’ve only seen one the right way now , though that may just be due to random selection . You gather a permanent currency in floor that you employ to level off up back at the basis coterie to make future outpouring easier .

Hordes of Hunger switches the average up a bit by add an interactive fight organisation instead of just having you mechanically set on , as is the caseful in most survivorslike . This arrangement is simple but really , really fun ; all of the secret plan ’s artillery are good , but I have n’t seen swordplay that feel this in force since The Witcher 3 , with wide sweeping attacks and the ever - beloved Beyblade twist making you finger like a gorgeous zombie - toss off machine . you could dodge and parry , with parrying feel specially good once you get the timing down . The caramel you call for in floor could be expanded upon and want some reconciliation , as the lightning science are overwhelmingly effective and can easy see you clearing a whole story without swinging your steel once you get them to tear down 3 .

Hordes Of Hunger Aoe

The foe design are majuscule , with each grade having unique foe , and I really appreciated the character interaction that happen mid - level , with our protagonist own a circumstances of role . I do think the audio on her vocalisation note needs a bit of mixture , because I can never really hear her over the sounds of combat , and this secret plan is not very absolvitory if you attempt to take the subtitles .

What Hordes of Hunger needs more than anything , besides the obvious additions of tale introductions , symmetricalness improvements , and some minor nitpicks ( I ’d care to see some more weapon types tot up to the game as well as a fashion to vary outfit ) , is more progression .

At the moment , there are only two forms of progression in Hordes of Hunger : your stats , increased by spend feathers at camp that directly enhance your dimension like max health or elemental damage , and weapon curiosity . The latter comes in three tier up of normal , uncommon , and uncommon , and you create raw weapons by combining weapon role to create a weapon of the relevant level with randomized stats .

There really needs to be more ways to advance your character in Hordes of Hunger , and there sure needs to be more tier of weapons to pile up . Once you ’ve got a rare - tone brand with comely stats , there becomes very short bonus to keep roll to make one well or to really try something else out . This makes all of the succeeding weapon shard drops from level kind of useless . With the only other progression being feather stats , you could quickly feel like there is n’t a whole lot to work toward any longer in Hordes of Hunger , besides finish the game for the sake of finishing it .

This is , of class , because the secret plan is still in Early Access , but it would be faulty of me not to channelize it out . I am , however , confident that the developers are n’t going to miss this system and will add more boulevard of progression as the game is worked on . I especially await forward to check what they cook up in the agency of radical - rare or legendary weaponry , because the biz seems to have some solid weapon designs already .

While we ’re at it , maybe we can get some other playable characters in Hordes of Hunger . The developers intelligibly know how to make some interesting characters ( something I already sleep with from Blood West ) , so the promise of more coming to the game ’s playable roll prepare me excited . Either way , Hordes of Hunger has shown its bones to be some sturdy stuff and nonsense , and while the plot has a ways to go before it ’s a finished product , I ’m confident that it ’ll be a really secure one once it gets there .
