Enigma of Fear is a pocket-sized , shockingly lovely yet still mysterious and chilling horror mystifier plot . With visceral puzzle , a great combination of pixel and 2D graphics , and a surprisingly sweet cast of part , there ’s probably something here for everyone . While the game has a somewhat amateur feel , it ’s undeniably charming , and I ’d be surprised if you did n’t fall in dearest with it .
In Enigma of Fear , you play as Mia , a extrasensory detective searching for her leave out father . With the assistant of booster , her close dog , and a sort of arm , you ’ll fight monsters and solve the case of a craze test to summons a dark god through a ritual ring the Enigma of Fear .
mightily off the bat , you have to appreciate how Enigma of Fear actually make you be a paranormal police detective . As a mystery - solving puzzle game , it ’s unequalled for how little steering it offer . There are no hints , waypoints , or helpful hint . Besides your dog ’s sense of smell ( you could play as the dog , which is adorable ! ) , nothing guides you . Enigma of Fear trust on your investigative skills and suspicion .
The game is so against steering , in fact , that it starts in media ray , with very little exposition about the narrative or character . You kind of just show up on the job and get to work , hardly even a tutorial prompting you on how to play as you figure out you ’re looking for your pappa . In a world full of unnecessary tutorials and mitt - belongings , I really respect Enigma of Fear ’s feeler to storytelling and whodunit .
For such a simple system , Enigma of Fear ’s combat feels really unspoiled . If you ’ve read my other review ( specially of FPS biz ) , you jazz I value satisfying combat over complexness . Enigma of Fear delivers . Firearms have a keen boot , every dig has meet optical and audio impingement , and hits palpate like they do damage ( even if it takes several to down an enemy ) , make the enemies sense dangerous . I ’d equate it to old - school Resident Evil .
The graphics is fantastic . The script - drawn character portrait are sensational and highly animize , but the pixel art steals the show . The pixel models are improbably expressive , with smooth animations and fun silhouettes . The always shifting camera angles make cinematic moments , campaign the boundary of the 2D pixelated plane .
The talks in Enigma of Fear can feel oddly cheery at clock time , with a circle of really precious and comedic moments between lineament . For some , this can certainly clash with the horror aesthetic , but I think that the secret plan still manage to be creepy , if not in a flash scary . The plot ’s foe design were nifty , and there were certainly some creepy-crawly concepts in there to latch onto .
While more of a nitpick , Enigma of Fear has a strange audio looping problem that , while most player wo n’t notice , I sure did . I nibble up on it mostly when I stepped aside from the game to take notes for this review article . After a certain amount of clock time , the euphony and atmosphere in an area will perceptibly cut and then start over , as if it is n’t on a perfect grummet . It ’s a modest quirk that just adds to the game ’s inexpert charm .
Enigma of Fear feel as though it was put together by a small , somewhat amateurish , squad . It sure enough does n’t look like it , with the art team absolutely pick apart it out of the car park . However , certain elements palpate sort of duct - pink together , bury about , or overall less professionally done . The part playacting is the most obvious example of this . While I ’m not saying the voice casting is bad , it definitely sounds like it might be their first , or one of their first , jobs , and some eccentric have voices I in person would n’t have picked for them .
Another example is the gaps in the plot ’s maps , which I for certain found myself wandering into . These gaps can lead you out of the intended play region , and with the game ’s optical direction , they can also have you getting a chip lost , pretend it voiceless to get back to where you entered .
Again , though , I really admire Enigma of Fear for these unskilled vibraharp . It make the biz feel wholesome , and I trust the whole team — creative person , coders , voice actors — continue their hard piece of work and make more projects together . I will certainly be hold on an middle on this squad and studio apartment , excitedly await their next release .
The Final Word
Enigma of Fear is an excellent short repulsion puzzle plot . With cunning character , fantastic prowess , and thoughtfully challenging teaser , it should easily become a favourite of genre fans and freshman alike .
