chemical chain of Freedom is a game that , above all else , surprise me .
I ca n’t secern you exactly what it was about the Chains of Freedom ’s Steam store page , but it left me unenthused . Maybe it ’s the somewhat generic deed card or the fact that the choose screenshots focus on the more boring elements of the plot . The trailers do a adept occupation of showing off the freak , while the screenshots mostly highlight the somewhat generic “ apocalyptic raiders . ” All I can say is that , based on my first feeling from the advertising , I was n’t excited . So it storm me to detect something pretty especial here .
Chains of Freedom tells the story of a post - revelatory mankind . And by mail , I really mean post . The world has been more or less reunified by a very evidently fascistic , furor - similar superstate call the Sovereignty . This happened after a mutation called Eden almost pass over out the human race , turning them into freakish monsters across a disgraceful spectrum of shape and sizes . The game open with the Sovereignty ’s so - called peacekeeper arriving to quit a doctor with a brainwash gadget from leading a terrorist coup against the world ’s last stay on government .
string of Freedom right away bear out to me for its excellent usage of fine art . Cutscenes , role portraits , and even the textures on 3D maps and mannequin all have a distinct graphical novel look . The incredible art dash is impressively reproducible , with very little distinction between gameplay and funny - panel cutscenes . Matching the cutscene style to the in - game humans could n’t have been well-situated . The look reminded me a lot of The Walking Dead comedian , especially since many of the enemies are scrappy , raider - like survivors who could have ill-use right out of the pages of Robert Kirkman ’s apocalyptic saga .
The focus on secure fine art focal point demo in the designing of the characters and enemies . There ’s a good amount of foe variety , and they all look large . I appreciate that new opposition were introduced with full - body graphical novel sketches . I was especially fond of the game ’s first chapter , which did a heavy job introducing the different enemy types , both human and Eden . That gargantuan squash racquet monster had serious boss - monster presence .
The game ’s voice acting is charmingly underwhelming . The main characters seem to have more professional voice actors , but many other characters sound like they ’re voiced by newer or lesser - known part endowment . As cable readings can feel goofy at fourth dimension , but I wish it even more knowing the actors gave it their best .
For all I enjoy about concatenation of Freedom , it is inauspicious to say that the gameplay was probably , in my opinion , the worst part of the experience .
Chains of Freedom is a turn - based squad maneuver game . If you ’ve played XCOM , you already sleep with what to expect . You betroth in top - down , turn - based struggle against various enemies , break off up the story with natural process as you get on through the game ’s levels .
The issue is that the combat is simple to a error . It does n’t really innovate on any of the genre ’s familiar automobile mechanic . The plot even use a hit chance percentage system , which I in person ca n’t stand .
The most dissatisfactory matter about the gameplay is that it ’s just ok . The mechanics are n’t Modern or complex , and there ’s no supply flair to make the battles feel more cinematic . Animations are basic . acquire bang or kills feels uneventful , even when you down a one - hit putting to death . With no grand strategy , unique automobile mechanic , or visual shock , the battles often just feel like a repetitive cycle of move , attack , end spell — until someone dies . It ’s a tiring substitution . I mean , heck , when fresh enemies appear , the screen languish to black , and they just show up on the mathematical function . That ’s it .
For a game I just praised for its art and cinematic moments , it ’s surprising that those qualities are missing in the fight — where it arguably matters most .
The best thing I can say about the gameplay is that the arm variety is strong . Weapons are n’t restricted by class , so you may give any weapon to any teammate . Beyond that , I found armed combat somewhat boring . I unremarkably just wanted to see more art or learn more about the story and characters whenever a fight started . It ’s strange to say that the least exciting part of the video game was the gameplay itself .
The truth is , if you ’re a fan of the genre , Chains of Freedom ’s gameplay is ok . You might even enjoy it . I ’ll intromit I ’m a little coloured since I do n’t really enjoy this genre ’s gameplay in universal . The game plays like others in the genre and runs smoothly , as I did n’t notice any microbe or glitches . I just personally find the expression a little stale , and I wish well developer would take more risks to refresh these familiar mechanic .
The Final Word
Chains of Freedom is a turn - based action game with unbelievable artistry and good storytelling , but its gameplay may be too familiar , missing chance to make its combat more exciting or original .
