Broken Roads is an RPG set in the post - apocalyptical outback . Here , your choices are not so black and blanched , not as well-heeled as good or malevolent , and will often be the difference between life-time or death and the lesser of two evils . The game ’s excellent writing is weighed down , dreary , and full of character , making for an adventure you will not shortly forget . It ’s full of decisions you ’d rather not have to make .
An straightaway interesting facet of Broken Roads is the apocalypse itself .
It ’s what I would call the ho-hum kind of apocalypse : nuclear war , big desert , yadda yadda . It lacks zombies or other supernatural or sci - fi elements that other Revelation of Saint John the Divine scope might have , and it adopt a more realistic look that lack the exciting flare of something like Mad Max .
However , it is n’t without charm . rugged Roads makes their Revelation interesting by going the “ grandfathered in ” road . In most circumstance like theirs , we stick to masses alive before the Revelation of Saint John the Divine . broken in Roads adds an interesting ingredient to its characters and earthly concern by making the apocalypse a few generation deep at this decimal point . Every theatrical role grow up in this hellhole of an outback , and that reflect in how they conduct and interact with each other and the creation around them .
I found the fictitious character creation to be especially interesting , specifically when it come to your origin story . I ’m a little fleck of an edge lord when it comes to my composition and eccentric preferences , so I , of path , extend with the Hired Gun background , which spoke of my background farm up as a civilize killer for my roughshod parent , working as their personal rentable mercenary until I found the courage to run away from home . An utterly tragical and awing backstory .
I was a little disappointed by the deficiency of strong-arm part creation , though . When it hail to your character ’s visual aspect , you do n’t get to tailor-make anything , and you just have to pick between some presets . However , these poser bet really ripe , and when you get into the rest of the game and see the depths the developer have gone to in other arena , it begins to make sense why they may have “ skipped out ” here .
Another astoundingly interesting part of persona creation is the morality quiz , which is the first introduction to the morality organization itself , which you ’ll see enough more of in the game .
This quiz saw me answering questions about supposed scenarios you might face in the apocalyptic outback and how you might respond to them . Each determination pushes you a small further in the direction of Humanist , Nihilist , Utilitarian , or Machiavellian . I terminate up with a cone split between Humanist and Utilitarian , which I ’m happy to say is the closest to being what you might call a good person that Broken Roads has to propose .
As the biz quickly reminds you , however , there is no such thing as a correct or wrong option in Broken Roads ; there are only refinement of grey . This is so much more than just a tagline , which play the plot would quickly force you to agnize .
The very first of many difficult selection you face necessitate a minuscule family : A mother , her boy , and the male parent he shot drained . You slip up upon the father ’s clay , cradled in the branch of the female parent , and the son shaking and crying not far away with the gun in hired hand . I wo n’t go bad how this goes down , but I was aghast to find out that I did n’t disagree with any of the choices you were given the prompting to make , something I truly do n’t call in ever feeling in other RPG game , even ones that arrogate to be morally ambiguous .
This style continues as you postdate your create character on their trek throughout the outback . Whoever you become , be it a psychopathic murderer who protect their party above all else or a bleed heart humanitarian who order their own people in peril to facilitate stranger , you ca n’t even say that your determination are completely wrong or that you ’re a hero or a villain . You will simply be what the waste needs you to be to survive .
Though moody and uncheerful as the plot can be , it ’s often also full of hilarious and sometimes even heartwarming moments . If I ’ve learned anything from some of my favorite comedians ( Randy Feltface and Michael Cusack ) , it ’s that so - called “ Aussie Humor , ” at least as I ’ve seen it , is hilarious . This game can often reward that with some of its more light-hearted quality interaction .
Oh , and by the way , Tina is my absolute favorite character . Of naturally , I congratulate her conductor ’s uniform .
Much of the game is dialogue , with much of the gameplay being about how you react to the storytelling around you . The game has a story it wants to tell , and like I ’ve said before , the authorship is splendid , if at sentence grievous , so have through it is hardly a task .
When the game is n’t all bout dialogue and character fundamental interaction , it feel a lot like playing a tabletop RPG . D&D player will quickly interpret the attribute - base , conversant - count character sheet you may meet out during reference creation . Combat also feels much like a grievous face-off in a tabletop game , with a turning order rolled at the source and attacks based on invisible dice roll .
Of course , technically , this means you have a miss percentage on your attacks , something I ’ve gone on record as saying that I detest . Alas , attempt not to hold it too much against Broken Roads . The game is clearly inspired by definitive RPGS of both playpen - and - newspaper and video game origin , and we ca n’t expect them to write a grotesque story and reinvent the wheel at the same meter . That would make it Baldur ’s Gate .

Broken Roads is a charming , phenomenally written , and incredibly engaging RPG about life in what remain of the Down Under , and is equally likely to break your centre and put a smile on your face with its wonder storytelling and characters .
